Welcome to the Continuous Longitudinal Manpower Survey 4 (CLMS 4) Public Use Data CD. This document provides basic information about the files on this CD. Clicking on underlined blue text in the sections below will link you to that document.
The contents of this CD can be found in the CDcontents document. The data summary provides a brief overview of the data.
Additional information about the data file can be found in the DOCUMENTATION directory. This information was provided by Westat, Inc. The file layout for the CLMS 4 data can be found in the index and layout files. The codebook contains more detailed descriptions and frequencies for each variable.
There is no final report or executive summary for the Continuous Longitudinal Manpower Survey. Also, the Users Guide referenced in the codebook is not available.
The DATA directory contains the CLMS 4 data file in ASCII text format, as provided by Westat, Inc. In addition to the ASCII format of the data, the Upjohn Institute has formatted the data into Stata version 8.0 and SAS transport files, which can be found in the "Upjohn Institute Created Files" folder. The SAS transport file provided by the Upjohn Institute is in the wide format, which has one record for each ID number/quarter/year combination, but multiple iterations of repeated variables. The file contents and variable means calculated by the Upjohn Institute can also be found in this folder.
Due to the limitation on the number of variables permitted in standard Stata version 8.0, the Stata file has been divided into three files designated CLMS4a.dta, CLMS4b.dta, and CLMS4c.dta. Each file contains the ID number and quarter and year of intake, which together identify each record uniquely. The CLMS4a file contains the variables from the ROOT, FFOL, SFOL, TFOL, INPA, FAML, and EXTR segments. The CLMS4b file contains data from the SCHL and PLAY segments, and the CLMS4c file contains data from the WORK and NISS segments. For descriptions of the various segments see the codebook and for a list of variables by segment see the layout file.
In order to fit all of the data files onto a single CD, the SAS transport file and Stata files created by the Upjohn Institute have been provided as self-extracting zip files (.exe file extension). The three Stata files were zipped into a single file named CLMS4_stata.exe, while the zipped SAS transport file is named CLMS4.exe. To open one of the zipped files, save the selected .exe file to your hard drive and double click on the filename. Then specify where the unzipped file should be saved and click 'Unzip'.
For those using the SAS export/transport files, the "Upjohn Institute Created files" folder also contains a sample program named Import.sas that can be used to import the SAS transport files into the user’s SAS system. The program CLMS4.sas, used to read the original ASCII file, is also included in this folder.
The IMAGES directory contains the header image used in this file. This directory does not contain any information about the project itself.
